Dying and the Pagan Community
By Grizz Dragonzhawk
The Dying Process
Dying is a process that we all must experience. However, death takes place in stages and it is how we go through these stages that allow us to find peace and reconciliation with ourselves, our family/friends, and our Gods.
When one enters the final stage of dying, there are two dynamics at work that are as different as night and day, but very interdependent. The first dynamic is on the physical plane - it is the process of the body shutting down. This process is orderly and made up of physical changes that are not medical emergencies. The best thing that one can provide for this shutting down of the body is comfort enhancing measures and responses that are appropriate and caring. The second dynamic deals with the emotional, psychological and spiritual side of dying. The dying person begins to release attachments to their environment, loved ones, and so on. This is a natural process that can be undermined by not being able to release any or all of the attachments mentioned and, thus, the person can linger until these are resolved. The dying person needs to resolve any issues and to be given permission to "let go". Appropriate responses to this dynamic include support and encouragement to release and to go through the transition of dying.
Death happens when the two dynamics are complete - the body has finished shutting down and there is an emotional, psychological and spiritual release. This needs to happen in a way that is appropriate to the beliefs, values, and lifestyle of the dying person.
Dying and the Pagan Community
Within the Pagan community, death is an accepted part of the life cycle. However, it is hardly ever discussed. Death and dying is part of the Wheel of the Year and, although acknowledged as part of the Wheel, many of us have a hard time dealing with it. And this is ok! Unless one deals with death on a regular basis, it is understandable to have a hard time dealing with death.
Although we are at the Spring Equinox and the lighter side of the year, death occurs at this time of the year too. Look at the sows who eat their young. Or any other natural events that can occur at this time of year or that will be starting soon.
Although death seems "final", we know that it is not. The Wheel keeps turning and life begins anew in the Spring.
