Welcome
Spring!
By Dawn Thomas
It's a little difficult for me to write about the warming of
the earth with the temperature here being over 90 degrees. Not
that I am complaining at all. That was why I moved from the
North. This is the time of year when we see the earth
awakening from winter's rest. It is a rebirth that we
celebrate this equinox. The saying "March comes in like a
lion and goes out like a lamb" comes to mind. The March
winds of the North will chill you to the bone. Then there is
the joy of seeing the first robin in the Spring. It is a sure
sign that spring is coming. The weather is beginning to change
and there are less days when a coat is needed when you go
outside. There is a feeling of newness in seeing the first sprouts
coming up from the ground or the tiny new leaves unfurling on
a tree. (read more... )

On End: Standing On Ceremony
By Donna Henes, Urban Shaman
For the past 30+ years I have served as an urban shaman,
celebration artist and unofficial "Commissioner of Public
Spirit" of New York City. During these past three decades
I have produced countless public participatory events and
ceremonies in parks, plazas, museums, hospitals, institutions
of learning, correctional facilities and the streets in over
100 cities in 9 countries. My most popular event by far is the
Vernal Equinox Celebration that I call "EGGS ON END:
STANDING ON CEREMONY." (read more... )

The
Prayer Tree of Spring
by Amy Martin
In my backyard, there is a tree that blooms. When we moved
here many years ago, it was lost in the darkness of oaks and
cedar elms that grew to tower over it.
An odd scrawny tree with tough green skin like a succulent
instead of bark, it bore tiny round leaves in sets of three
and nasty two-inch thorns. Later we found out it was a
trifolate orange tree from China, brought back by the
traveling businessman who built the house. (read more... )

Goddesses
An Antic Cronish Goddess
By
Barbara Ardinger, Ph.D.
Sisters, do certain parts of your anatomy that used to stand right up and salute, now ignore the flag no matter now vigorously it's waving? Is "perky" a word whose meaning passed you by a decade ago? From behind, do you look like you're sitting down even when you're standing up? Does it require a crane and two body-builders to lift you out of a deep knee bend?

The Origin of Easter Eggs
By
Bendis
At the time of the Vernal Equinox, eggs were used for the creation of talismans and were also ritually eaten. There is little doubt that clutches of eggs laid by many different kinds of birds in the Spring were a welcome dietary supplement to early hunter/gatherers after the sparseness of
Winter... (read more... )

Out
Goes the Veg
By Donyea
I always love this time of year in the garden as it's time to
start planting out the early seedlings we have been nurturing
and to add new seeds to the propagators. The passing of winter
also allows us to be outside planting directly into the soil
and this year the kids have plans for a butterfly section in
our garden. (read more... )
