One Pagan's
Beltane
By Grizz Dragonzhawk
With Beltane fast approaching, I am often asked what Beltane means to me - not only by
my Pagan friends, but by friends outside of the Pagan community as well. I often answer that to me it is a time of celebrating - a celebration of the Goddess and God coming together, of life, of creation, of new beginnings, and, of course, the Maypole dance. I could go on with this list, but we would be here for a while. Some nod their heads in understanding while others look at me with quizzical looks especially over the Maypole bit, but in general, most understand that this is a time of full awakening and creativity.
However, this year things are a little different. My perspective is now a bit different and the flow of time seems to be going a bit faster now a days. I am older now than when I began to walk this path (in more ways than I can count) and I could swear that we just had Samhain two months ago. This year,
Beltane means a bit more to me than it has in the past.
What is different this year from previous Beltane celebrations? To be honest, I am unsure. But I feel that this is a time to try new things, for new beginnings, to be creative and expressive in ways that I had not thought of before. I have taken up gardening again (after years of not doing anything aside from the bare minimum with my little plot), have come back to writing, and have begun other ventures - my brain is teeming with new ideas and new ways of looking at things.
So, this is the question that I pose to you, dear readers: What does Beltane
mean to you? I am not talking about the agreed upon definition, but to you personally. How does this part of the Wheel of the Year affect you personally? How does it make you feel? What energies draw you? How does your creative side flow at this time of year? Although these questions seem easy enough, they may be more difficult to answer. If we look deep within ourselves, we can find answers that we did not know we had and we can become creative creatures that can look at situations with new eyes.
